Dale and Carrie Simmons grow peaches on the same bench above Okanagan Lake that Dale's grandfather planted in 1962. The lake holds the day's heat through the night, which is why a Summerland peach tastes the way a peach is supposed to.

For years their best fruit went to the packing house for whatever the packing house felt like paying. Croply flipped that: now they pick to order, at full ripeness, for people they'll shake hands with on Saturday. “We used to pick for the truck. Now we pick for the neighbours buying it. Different job entirely.”
